Flux is the name given to a purulent abscess that occurs under the periosteum as a result of infection. The disease is also called periostitis, and must be treated by a dentist. Should I do anything to make the flux break through faster at home? Depends on the situation in which the patient finds himself.
Do I need to treat burst flux?
Dentists note that it is necessary to treat gumboil. After all, the disease is dangerous because it leads to many complications, including phlegmon (purulent inflammation of the jaw tissue) and even sepsis - with this pathology, the infection spreads throughout the body.
So, why treat periostitis if the abscess has broken through:
- the pus will not come out completely - its remains will still be under the gum and can give rise to an inflammatory process with even worse consequences,

Development of the disease
Periostitis can be suspected by the unpleasant pain that constantly appears closer to the root of the tooth. The disease develops in several directions and often ends with a breakthrough of pus:
- primary flux - accompanied by swelling of the face on the side of appearance;
- inflammation spreads to nearby tissues, causing a purulent process;
- the gum pocket between the teeth and soft tissues becomes infected;
- There is extensive swelling of the face and severe swelling on the side of the diseased tooth.
While periostitis develops, it cannot be opened using additional methods. During the purulent process, the patient feels a tugging pain, his temperature rises, and painkillers do not work.
Inflammation should be treated with antibiotics prescribed by the dentist.
It is dangerous to treat flux at home due to the risk of complications. If the swelling becomes global, phlegmon may begin - the purulent contents of the tumor penetrate between the muscles of the face, into the neck, and can seep into the chest. As a result, sepsis begins, infected blood enters the brain and leads to coma or death.
If you open the abscess with a needle or other mechanical means, the patient will feel slight relief. But after some time the process will resume with renewed vigor .
What to do if the flux bursts
How quickly you take action depends on the severity of the consequences of purulent inflammation. So, doctors recommend the following:
- immediately after the pus comes out, dissolve a teaspoon of ordinary soda in a glass of boiled water. Thoroughly rinse the mouth with the resulting solution,
Rinsing with water and baking soda - Try to go to the dentist right away. The specialist will have to open the abscess and thoroughly clean the cavity with an antiseptic. Flux removal occurs under local anesthesia,
- Next, you need to eliminate the cause of the flux: remove inflammation from the area of the tooth root by cleaning the canals and filling it, or completely removing the tooth,
- if medical help is not immediately available, rinsing with soda solution should be repeated several times a day, especially after each meal,
- If the pain remains and is difficult to bear, let’s take painkillers,
- Before going to bed, you can put a tampon soaked in a special ointment (for example, Miraslavin) on the sore spot. Keep for up to 20 minutes. Repeat the procedure daily for three to five days.

Simple means to speed up flux breakthrough
An abscess causes discomfort, is very painful and makes the patient nervous. But you cannot pierce the lump yourself to break through the pus. You can speed up the process of maturation of the abscess using medications and folk remedies.
Pus that breaks into the oral cavity from a lump during a breakthrough is no longer so dangerous.
At home, you can do the following: rinse your mouth with a disinfecting solution, make sure that there are no cracks, wounds, or open caries in the area of the abscess. Then the fingers are treated with alcohol or chlorhexidine. If the flux is well matured, lightly press on it. The walls should burst.
The resulting pus is spat out - if it penetrates the stomach, it can cause infection . Then the mouth is rinsed again with an antiseptic (Miramistin or chlorhexidine). Remember that decoctions of medicinal herbs will be useless in this case.
You need to rinse your mouth for another 1-2 days until the remaining wound heals. Make sure there is no new pus collecting in it. To prevent relapse, maintain good oral hygiene.
Herbal tincture for gumboil
To make the flux break through faster, you can make a solution from “Rotokan” - a tincture consisting of yarrow, calendula and chamomile:
- dilute 1 part product in 10 parts water;
- rinse your mouth;
- repeat 4-5 times a day.
The drug eliminates inflammation, destroys bacteria and relieves pain. Instead of Rotokan, they use a tincture of calendula in alcohol to break through the gumboil.
Aqueous infusions of herbs for flux
To make the abscess break faster, you can use other herbs. An infusion of sage and green tea is used to rinse the mouth.
When treating the disease, you should not heat a purulent abscess, since under the influence of heat the abscess spreads to nearby tissues and worsens the patient’s condition. If dental caries is not treated, the abscess will constantly return. The destruction of bone tissue continues for up to 20 years, and during this entire period a sluggish infection is present in the body, weakening the immune system.
Rinse solutions are prepared from some dry mixtures: take 1 part herb to 5 parts water and boil for 15 minutes over low heat. The following are suitable for this: plantain, coltsfoot, sage, chamomile, calendula, oak bark. You can make combined infusions:
Melissa . For 1 liter of water take 0.5 tbsp. dry grass. Pour boiling liquid over the mixture and cover with a warm towel. After an hour, filter, you can rinse every 2-3 hours so that the abscess breaks through faster.
Oak bark and sage . Take 1 part each of lemon balm, oak bark, and sage. Pour boiling water so that there is 3-4 times more of it than the mixture. Rinse your mouth 7-10 times during the day.
Hyssop herb . At 2 tbsp. l. dry composition, take 1 cup of boiling water, pour in for 2 hours. Strain and mix with 10 drops of table vinegar. You should rinse your mouth several times a day to quickly break through the lump.
Mint and birch buds . Mix 100 g of dry heel, 50 g of angelica, 50 g of birch buds and the same amount of periwinkle. Pour a liter of boiling water for 50 minutes. You should rinse every 3 hours.
Oak bark . Mix 0.5 liters of boiling water with 2 tbsp. l. dry composition for 30 minutes. You can rinse every hour to relieve pain and speed up the breakout of the lump.
The use of herbal infusions does not guarantee the desired result. They are prescribed to speed up the healing process, disinfect and relieve pain from the flux.
Other means
Here's what to do to make the gumboil break through faster using additional preparations:
- dilute 3 drops of iodine in a glass of water, rinse your mouth;
- take an aloe leaf , cut it in half, apply the mucous part to the damaged area (do not forget to remove the needles from the sides so that they do not injure the gums). After 4-6 hours or after eating, change the application;
- use of cabbage leaf - pour boiling water over the vegetable for 10-15 minutes, then cut out a small piece from the cabbage. It should be soft. Then the product is applied to the damaged area;
- application of propolis - a piece of cotton wool is moistened in alcohol tincture and applied to the damaged area;
- clove flower - the spice is crushed and applied to the gumboil.
The use of alcohol compresses is dangerous for the mucous membrane, test before applying to the damaged area. If dryness, burning or other unpleasant sensations appear, do not use recipes with vodka/alcohol.
Medicinal ointments
Some homemade ointments, as well as pharmaceutical products, stimulate the rapid opening of the flux. The best medications are Metrogyl Denta and Levomekol.
"Levomegol" eliminates inflammation, helps with purulent processes and accelerates the healing of the damaged area after a flux breakthrough. Metrogyl relieves pain and destroys all bacteria.
At home, the ointment is prepared from pure beeswax:
- 1 tsp. melt the wax in a water bath;
- add 1 tsp. vegetable oil;
- grind the boiled yolk.
Apply the product 2-3 times a day . It is necessary to apply the ointment at the first symptoms of flux; it accelerates its maturation and prevents infection of nearby tissues.
Additional Products
To make the flux break through faster, you can make a compress of soda. For 1 procedure, take a teaspoon of soda, wrap it in a bandage, apply it to the inflamed gum and press it with your cheek (the inside of your lip). The compress needs to be changed every 3-4 hours. Whether the soda flux will break through or not depends on the state of the process. For severe tumors, 1-2 days are sufficient.
An infusion of sage and mustard plaster helps to break through an abscess. The cotton wool is moistened in warm liquid and applied to the sore spot for several hours. You can supplement the procedure by rinsing with “dead” water.
The yolk mixed with linden honey has similar properties. They are added to the base - a mixture of wax and vegetable oil. Apply the product to the damaged area along with cotton wool.
Vodka tinctures
You can quickly break through the flux at home using alcohol or vodka tincture. They are sold in pharmacies, but if you have the resources, it is better to make the medicine yourself:
- for 90 g of propolis take 0.5 liters of vodka;
- leave for 2 weeks in a dark place, shaking occasionally;
- filter and pour into a dark glass bottle.
Apply the product using a cotton ball . It is necessary to prepare the drug if the flux appears 2 or 3 times. Long-term aging of the tincture is the only disadvantage of the product, since it will not be possible to use it at the first sign of an abscess.
You can prepare preparations for quickly breaking through flux yourself or buy them at a pharmacy. However, none of them will be 100% effective in all cases. Treatment of periostitis should be carried out in a dental office, in compliance with appropriate sanitary standards. At home, there is a high risk of infection in nearby tissues.
