Clarity braces: advantages, disadvantages and contraindications

Do you dream of beautiful, straight teeth? In this case, you will probably have to use braces. Of course, you will have to wear braces for a year or two, but this does not mean that by correcting your bite, you will have to change a lot in your life. With the Clarity braces system, you can get rid of crowded teeth, gain slender dentition, and allow yourself to smile without embarrassment. The fact is that the ceramic braces system is not conspicuous and works to enhance the beauty of your future smile.

Review and characteristics of the Clarity braces system

If, in addition to correcting dental defects, you are also concerned about the beauty of your smile during the treatment process, then specially designed Clarity ceramic braces are the most suitable option. The main feature of the design of the device is the presence of a metal groove and an arch attachment system, which serves to stimulate the movement of teeth into the required position.

The sliding of the arc occurs softly and is not felt at all. This feature is called self-ligation. Unlike metal devices, there are no rubber ligatures, which tend to become stained over time due to exposure to food and the presence of dyes in some products.

The ceramics used are able to withstand heavy loads, and you don’t have to worry about it being damaged or broken when chewing food.

Design

The Clarity SL bracket system is a self-ligating double design. The peculiarity of this model is that it does not have ligatures, which increases the comfort of use and reduces the risk of injury to the lips and cheeks. Self-ligating structures do not require frequent visits to a specialist to change the tension of the arch, since the system itself adjusts the force of pressure on the teeth. Installation of braces is performed only on the outer side of the dentition, since the system is of the vestibular type.

Clarity braces have another distinctive element - a stainless steel groove through which the arch is passed. The advantage of having a metal groove in the system is the possibility of free sliding of the arc without increased friction, which affects the condition of the periodontium and often leads to damage to the teeth.

There is also a distinctive feature in the process of fixing the system. To ensure reliable adhesion to the enamel and eliminate the formation of voids or gaps during the production process, a special composition is applied to the plates, which, after being applied to the teeth and illuminated with a blue lamp, is independently fixed to the enamel. The adhesive used changes color at the time of installation, so its excess is visible and can be easily removed. This fastening technique is called Flash-Free and is an official development of 3M Unitek.

What are they?

These systems are made of ceramics and are designed to straighten individual teeth or the entire dentition.

Patients often choose them because the manufacturer has provided the opportunity to use a combination of their systems, which gives greater effect in a short time compared to other brace systems.

What type are they?

The braces of this brand are produced in both self-ligating and ligature types . Self-ligating systems are elements with locks for the arc, which can be made of different materials.

The Clarity company gives preference to ceramic clasps and braces with a metal arch.

The manufacturer of Clarity structures, 3M, makes most of the systems with a vestibular mechanism for putting on the outside of the teeth.

How are they different from analogues?

Using these designs, the patient does not have to worry about them changing color when using coloring products, as happens with some other systems. The material is resistant to staining.

Clarity braces perfectly match the color of the enamel, because of this, many do not even notice that there is anything on the teeth. Some types of systems are modified by reducing shapes and rounding corners.

Such characteristics give patients confidence that, in addition to reliability and effectiveness in treatment, they will receive aesthetics and comfort when using the structures.

The ceramics used in these systems absorb light . This small nuance solves many aesthetic problems and removes psychological discomfort. When light hits the structures, there is no reflection or glare effect, so they are little noticeable even in clear weather.

Clarity designs differ from analogues in a number of parameters:

  • The technologies used (SmartClip, Flash Free) enable patients to get quick results in correcting their bite, reducing the number of doctor visits and time spent on consultation.
Fixation occurs using reflective glue, which allows all elements to be firmly secured.
  • good protection of tooth enamel for the entire period of treatment. When installing these systems, there is no space between the enamel and structural elements, thereby eliminating the possibility of damage, food particles or staining.
  • low-profile plates , which none of the competitors have, minimize discomfort when using the system.
Being the smallest in size and improved with the latest technology, Clarity braces minimize the presence of a foreign body in the oral cavity and do not change articulation.

Find out whether it really hurts to put braces on your teeth in our new article.

In this review we will talk about the types of diastemas.

Improved technology Clarity SL Advanced

As is already clear from the name, Clarity SL Advanced is an improved version of Clarity braces with a self-ligating function. Special clips that hold the arches open easily and snap into place without any problems. This significantly saves the orthodontist’s time, simplifying the process of changing the arch, and it will be more pleasant for the patient to be freed from the treatment procedure as soon as possible.

The polycrystalline material used to make miniature products is almost invisible on the teeth. For this reason, patients do not hesitate to take photographs, because Clarity braces will be invisible in the photo.

The shape of ceramic locks has also undergone some changes - it has become flatter with rounded corners. It is much more convenient to use this model for children, since it does not cause much inconvenience and shortens the period of adaptation. During wear, the ceramics retain its color unchanged and remain white throughout the entire period.

Procedure for installing ceramic braces

Installation of ceramic braces begins with the diagnostic stage. At the first appointment, the orthodontist will examine the oral cavity, determine the type of malocclusion, and evaluate the occlusion. Then he will definitely send you for an OPTG - an orthopantomogram or a panoramic photograph of the jaws. This is necessary in order to assess the condition of the root system of the teeth, identify hidden contraindications in a timely manner, etc. As part of the diagnostic stage, the doctor will take impressions of the jaws and send them to a dental laboratory, where plaster models will be made - they will be needed to develop an optimal treatment plan. Sometimes a computed tomography scan or an image of the temporomandibular joint may be required.

Before starting orthodontic treatment, it is important to undergo a complete oral hygiene. As part of the rehabilitation, caries treatment, tooth extraction according to indications, and professional teeth cleaning are carried out.

In some cases, the installation of braces is preceded by a surgical stage, including the removal of healthy teeth. The most common case is the removal of eighth teeth, especially those that have caused difficulties in eruption - impacted or not fully erupted, growing in the wrong direction and putting pressure on neighboring teeth.

The second stage is the direct fixation of ceramic braces. The doctor attaches each of them to the enamel surface using a special dental glue, and then connects all structural elements with a metal arc. The installation process takes about 2 hours.

During the first few days, discomfort, discomfort and soreness may occur. As you get used to it, they will pass. And in order to prevent injury to the mucous membranes of the lips, you can use special food-grade wax - your doctor will definitely tell you about this.

Benefits of Clarity SL and Clarity Advanced braces

The strength of the materials used allows us to effectively treat jaw pathologies and bites of varying degrees of complexity. Tooth enamel remains unharmed. The unique technology used prevents chipping and protects the health of teeth. The patient experiences minimal inconvenience associated with installation and removal of the system. A special polycrystalline material looks like natural tooth enamel, while possessing a natural shine and the ability to retain its color throughout the treatment period.

Many clients associate ceramics with high cost, however, the price of Clarity SL braces is quite affordable and is determined after an examination by an orthodontist. Among all the advantages of the presented designs, the main ones can be identified:

  • convenience of self-ligation;
  • beauty and aesthetics;
  • strength and safety.

Smoothed forms do not injure soft tissues, thereby eliminating additional pain and problems. No special care is required while wearing it; just brush your teeth regularly.

The clinic’s specialists will provide complete information regarding compliance with oral hygiene conditions and what actions need to be taken. If all requirements are met, you do not have to worry about the durability of the installed structure. Correcting crooked teeth can be aesthetic and not so painful; the main thing is to choose a reliable dental clinic.

Caring for Clarity Braces

Due to the fact that Clarity ceramic braces are not affected by food dyes, the patient does not have to change his preferences for certain foods and drinks. But since ceramics is still a rather fragile material, it is advisable to consume hard vegetables and fruits, nuts and other hard foods in crushed form.

Like any other dental device, Clarity braces require careful care. Regular brushing of teeth twice a day - morning and evening, as well as rinsing the mouth after each meal

is the main condition for long-term operation of the system and prevention of caries development.

Indications and contraindications

Treatment with ceramic braces is indicated in the following cases:

  • some malocclusions;
  • Tremas and diastemas - “gaps” between the front and other teeth;
  • incorrect position of individual teeth without malocclusion - for example, tooth dystopia.

Sometimes ceramic braces will not help you cope with your problems. So, with a deep bite, when the upper crowns greatly overlap the lower ones, a more durable solution will be required - ceramic braces can simply come off or break due to constant mechanical pressure. The same applies to cases where malocclusion or tooth position are accompanied by bruxism - involuntary grinding of teeth during sleep.

A relative contraindication is periodontal and dental diseases - preliminary treatment and sanitation of the oral cavity will be required.

Features of 3M branded ceramics

  • The color of finely dispersed opaque ceramics completely matches the natural shade of tooth enamel.
  • It absorbs rather than reflects rays of sunlight and artificial light.
  • Therefore, Clarity braces, fixed to the surface of the teeth, do not shine or glare, but completely merge with them, without attracting increased attention from strangers.
  • Many “brace wearers” undergoing treatment with a unique device compare it to an exquisite status decoration and are not at all embarrassed to smile, confidently showing off their miniature locks.

Dentists, in turn, especially appreciate the unsurpassed strength of polycrystalline ceramics. To achieve such high strength characteristics in a fairly brittle material, the smallest particles are subjected to high temperatures, causing them to sinter.

Differences between ligature and self-ligating braces -

Today, there are two main systems for fastening the arch - 1) using ligatures (rubber rings or metal wire), 2) using special locking fasteners on the surface of the bracket plates. There are also bracket systems that combine two possibilities for fixing the arch, i.e. they immediately have micro-locks and special hooks for attaching ligatures.

  • Non-ligature braces (Fig. 19) - they are also called self-ligating. On the surface of each such bracket there is a special micro-lock, which snaps into place after the metal arch is inserted into the bracket groove - as a result of which the arch is securely held. In non-ligature braces, as a rule, a passive self-ligation system is implemented, i.e. micro-locks will only hold the archwire and simply prevent it from falling out of the bracket. In this case, the arch will be able to slide along the bracket groove.

These braces are, of course, more expensive. If the cost of 1 sapphire ligature bracket “Inspire-ICE” is about 1200 rubles, then the cost of one self-ligating bracket “Damon clear” will be about 2500 rubles. Moreover, both of these braces options are produced by the same manufacturer (Ormco, USA).

Manufacturers producing ligature-free braces position them as a new word in orthodontics. In addition, more expensive braces are also beneficial for orthodontists themselves, because their remuneration is a certain percentage of revenue. Therefore, there is now a lot of information on the Internet on the unconditional advantages of non-ligature braces over ligature ones, and this information, to put it mildly, does not correspond to reality.

Refuting the exclusivity of ligature-free braces –

Fixation of the arch in braces can be either active or passive (Fig. 20-21). The active type of fixation (active ligation) is when the arch is fixed very tightly in the bracket groove that it cannot even slide in it. Passive type of fixation (passive ligation) is when the arch is only held in the groove and can slide freely in it. But why is this so important to us?

The fact is that at different periods of orthodontic treatment, either one or the other type of fixation will be optimal. This is due to the fact that when correcting different inclinations and rotations of teeth, different types of occlusion, to expand the dentition, it is optimal to use different types of fixation of the arch in the bracket groove, changing them, if necessary, from one to another. And it is very good when the orthodontist has the technical ability to change the passive type of fixation to active at any time, and vice versa.

When using the most common ligature braces, you can simply change the type of fixation. To do this, it is enough to replace a stiffer rubber ligature with a more elastic one (or vice versa). But when using non-ligature braces, this is not possible, because... micro-locks can be exclusively - 1) or with an active type of fixation (the arch sits tightly in the groove and does not slide), 2) or with a passive type of fixation (the arch slides freely in the groove, and the lock simply does not allow it to fall out of the bracket). Most often, non-ligation bracket systems implement just such a passive self-ligation system.

Conclusions : the ligature type of braces is always more optimal for any patient, because... allows you to easily change the type of arch ligation (from active to passive, and vice versa). By the way, this is why orthodontic treatment using ligature braces always has significantly fewer complications. But when using self-ligating braces, the orthodontist simply does not have the opportunity to change the passive arch ligation to active, and therefore, in certain clinical situations, all orthodontic treatment often goes “through one place.”

Myths about ceramic systems

The Internet is simply littered with various stories that are apparently made up by competitors providing outdated metal installation services.

Myth : Ceramic systems are heavy. The lower jaw is constantly under load and droops. Truth : if you compare the specific density of metal and ceramics, then everything will fall into place. Ceramics 7850 kg/cub.m. Steel – 7900 kg/cub.m. No comments needed.

Myth : They are difficult to take on and off. Truth : Modern designs make the system easy to operate. Some models have an unlocker, which serves as a kind of latch.

Myth : Ceramics are colored with food coloring. Truth : The ceramic surface has a protective coating that prevents contact with food. However, hygiene should not be neglected, especially during the treatment period.

Myth : Braces often crumble during surgery and particles can get into the throat. Truth : It all depends on the quality of the product and the qualifications of the specialist. If you purchased certified products and turned to a good clinic for help, everything will be fine.

All-ceramic braces –

Such braces will be made entirely of ceramics and do not contain metal elements.
For example, this includes budget bracket systems made from traditional ceramics - “Clarity Advanced”, “Reflections”, “Forestadent Aesthetic”. They will have a ligature type of arch fixation (i.e., there are special hooks on the surface of the braces designed for fixing rubber ligatures). More expensive versions of all-ceramic braces will be made from artificial sapphire, and therefore will have high transparency. These include the “Inspire-ICE” and “Radiance” braces (they are also with a ligature type of fixation), as well as the most expensive option - the self-ligating braces “Damon clear-1” and “Damon clear-2”, in which the metal arch will be held no longer with the help of ligatures, but due to a micro-lock on the surface of each bracket. “Damon clear-2” is the latest generation of this line (with improved micro-lock security).

Installation of Clarity Advanced braces (video 1) –

Clarity Advanced ceramic braces are made from traditional ceramic (not artificial sapphire) and are therefore white in color and have no translucency. Such braces will look better on teeth with a low degree of transparency of tooth enamel, teeth of darker shades.

Installation of sapphire brackets “Inspire-ICE” (video 2) –

Notice the stunning appearance of Inspire-ICE ligature braces made from artificial sapphire (stunning clarity). But keep in mind that such braces will look good only on teeth of very light shades, as well as with highly transparent tooth enamel.

Installation of “Damon clear-2” braces (video 3) –

Video 2 shows the installation of non-ligature ceramic braces “Damon clear-2”, which have micro-locks on their surface for snapping and holding a metal arch. Please note that in a number of clinical situations, all-ceramic braces cannot be placed on absolutely all teeth, and therefore sometimes in the area of lateral teeth (molars and premolars) they are often combined with other types of braces.

Application of the latest developments

The manufacturer places special emphasis on the reliability of fastening systems to tooth enamel. The 3M company has developed a new Flash Free technology, which allows you to gently treat malocclusion.

Its use eliminates the need to remove excess glue from the tooth surface after fixing the plates. This, in turn, reduces the risk of microcracks in which bacteria multiply, damaging the enamel.

What is this technology? Flash Free is the latest development in orthodontics, a real breakthrough in this direction.

Each bracket plate already has a layer of clear adhesive on it. As soon as the doctor begins installation, the adhesive spreads, soaking the non-woven backing, which prevents it from extending beyond 2 mm from the edge of the sole.

There are no gaps or gaps left between the tooth and the plate, which helps preserve the enamel and protects it from the effects of acid, which leads to caries.

Two more technologies are actively used when installing braces: a compressible non-woven substrate and a low-viscosity composite material.

When the plate is installed and pressed against the surface of the tooth, the backing allows the glue to penetrate and fill the void between the base of the bracket and the enamel. A thin rim is formed around the perimeter, which prevents excess glue from accumulating.

This way, the exact amount of adhesive left on the edge is needed to secure the bracket to the tooth.
